چکیده

Partially conservative learning is a variant of partial learning whereby the learner, on a text for a target language L, outputs one index e with L = We infinitely often and every further hypothesis d is output only finitely often and satisfies L 6⊆ Wd. The present paper studies the learning strength of this notion, comparing it with other learnability criteria such as confident partial learning, explanatory learning, as well as behaviourally correct learning. It is further established that for classes comprising infinite sets, partially conservative learnability is in fact equivalent to explanatory learnability relative to the halting problem. 1998 ACM Subject Classification Dummy classification

Machine Induction Without Revolutionary Changes in Hypothesis Size

This paper provides a beginning study of the effects on inductive inference of paradigm shifts whose absence is approximately modeled by various formal approaches to forbidding large changes in the size of programs conjectured. One approach, called severely parsimonious, requires all the programs conjectured on the way to success to be nearly (i.e., within a recursive function of) minimal size....

Partial Learning of Recursively Enumerable Languages

This paper studies several typical learning criteria in the model of partial learning of r.e. sets in the recursion-theoretic framework of inductive inference. Its main contribution is a complete picture of how the criteria of confidence, consistency and conservativeness in partial learning of r.e. sets separate, also in relation to basic criteria of learning in the limit. Thus this paper const...

Nonrecursive Cellular Automata Invariant Sets

Languages correspo nding to two invariant subshifts, the limit set and periodic set are examined. The complement of the language produced by a cellular automaton limit set is always recursively enumerable (r .e.), and modulo intersection with a regular langu age and s-limited homomor phism, all languages wit h r.e. complements arise this way. Th e language produced by the periodic set is always...

Gold-Style and Query Learning Under Various Constraints on the Target Class

In language learning, strong relationships between Gold-style models and query models have recently been observed: in some quite general setting Gold-style learners can be replaced by query learners and vice versa, without loss of learning capabilities. These ‘equalities’ hold in the context of learning indexable classes of recursive languages. Former studies on Gold-style learning of such inde...
